“In vain they do worship me”

“In vain they do worship me”

“teaching human precepts as doctrines.”

(Matthew 15:9; Mark 7:7; NRSV)

The above words of Jesus Christ concern false worship among religious people of the past and they prove that people can indeed worship Christ “in vain.” The New Living translation of Matthew 15:9 clearly tells us why such worship is absolutely worthless and “a farce”:

“… for they replace God’s commands with their own man-made teachings.”

In other words, they SUBTRACTED from what God said to do, and ADDED things that God never spoke of. Of course, were we to make the same mistake as they did, our worship of Christ would be vain and worthless as well. Yet unknown to nearly everyone, this is exactly what has happened. For rather than teaching the pure Word of God — including the promise of Christ’s return — religious leaders today have substituted (added) pagan teachings, pagan practices, and pagan holidays (Xmas, Easter, Lent, etc.), which God has condemned (Deuteronomy 12:30). In this and many other ways they have ADDED to God’s Word, which is a practice that He has repeatedly commanded us not to do (Deuteronomy 12:32; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18-19).

To a true Christian this should be extremely important. For if a man (or woman) in his study of the Bible subtracts from God’s Word and adds his own thoughts, he’s doing the very thing that Christ has warned against in the above scriptures. As a penalty for this, Christ states that “God shall take away his part out of the Book of Life” (Revelation 22:19), meaning such a person will not be saved in this life. And Christ means what he says!

Sadly, however, according to God’s Word there are multiple millions of professing Christians worldwide who have “fallen away” from the truth (II Thessalonians 2:3; KJV) in a great “apostasy” (NAS), resulting in a counterfeit Christianity. As the apostle Paul predicted, people “won’t listen to what the Bible says but will blithely follow their own misguided ideas” (II Timothy 4:4; TLB). Or as we read in the King James version, “they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”

The bottom line is this: for one to please God in his or her worship then one must have God’s holy spirit (Romans 8:8-9), which is the spirit of truth (John 14:17; 15:26) and will lead a person unto all truth (John 16:13). This results in a true and proper worship of God that God desires (John 4:23-24), for His spirit opens up the Word of God to people in a way that they have never experienced before, revealing proper worship. Even secrets of God are revealed to them, secrets such as “Who, ultimately, will be saved?“……”What is the true biblical marriage?“…… “Where can one find ‘The End’ of the Bible?“……“Is salvation entirely the work of God?“……”What does it mean in the Bible to be manly?“……”What’s God’s great purpose in evil and suffering?“……”What laws in the O.T., if any, do we need to keep today?“……”Has God authorized women to pastor and teach in His church?“……”What is the specific clothing we all must have in order to get saved?“……”What exactly is the New Jerusalem in the book of Revelation?“.

These are among the many questions answered in the 15- page biblical exposition titled….”The Greatest Secrets of the Bible.”
